Because Greenville is home to many of the highest ranked professional BMX riders (Dave Mirra, Ryan Nyquist, and Mike Laird just to name a few), our city is known as "BMX Pro Town USA."
Greenville was founded in 1771 as "Martinsborough.” In 1786, the name was changed to Greenesville in honor of General
Nathanael Greene, the
American Revolutionary War hero. It was later shortened to Greenville.
The south bank of the Tar River was not Greenville’s first home. Our town was originally located three miles east of its present location and was moved in 1774.
